The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, aside from his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
